about

Jeff Gburek: electric guitar, bassic guitar, microfreak, drum machine, bells, gongs, hand-drum, violin, zither, voice
John Elmanahi: electric oud, prepared and affected electric guitar, 8 string bass, shortwave radio
John Palumbo: drums, synthesizer, sticks, chimes, saw-blades, need we say more?

Jeff writes: Process: after some Euphoric Poring over of the old sound Archives & assembling a few of the retrospective albums, we had the itch to play and record new material. That I resided in Europe -- and we had just hit pandemic times -- made live encounters rather impossible. After a few sketchy zoom sessions, we started to do it by file shares, putting some tigers in the tanks by making the exchanges as quick as possible to keep things fresh. That said, this spread represents only a fraction of tracks completed since we started up again. Although we had wild flings in different styles, it was not easy to find one unifying narrative or session until this. Tantric Tantrums came about, as an album whose name allowed certain tracks to fit into the format of open, improvised, slightly or blindly structured forays into atmospherics, groove jams, noise, dub, a bit of remix (Birds if in Poland) and the kind of sudden upheavals and mayhem typical of our live sets back in the day.

John Elmanahi writes: Tantric Tantrums. This record came about during the isolation of the pandemic lockdown. We began by creating ambient textures or skeletal progressions that we could each contribute to. We kept it loose with regards to content and discussed dynamics and sonic mix. After doing this for some period of time, we experimented with “live jams” via vid conference with mixed results, but still trying to capture OSS live sound. The results are the pieces which we all connected to most seamlessly and passed the standard. We hope you enjoy Tantric Tantrums and continue to support our efforts.

Pill Culture encapsulates various forms of music all in one. Elements of trance and house, ambient and, to use a vague term, experimental. All of these particular forms were generated from a multitude of objects - official musical instruments as well as found objects. For example, if one listens closely, an audible sound of a rustling plastic bag may be heard filling an audible space in the piece with exacting intentions.

John Palumbo writes: This latest release summarizes the past 2 decades of musical experience of each of the three individuals in the group, where our respective experiences culminate harmoniously to produce these tracks. While OSS has been on a hiatus during this time, our synchronicity has been maintained through the ether as evident in the synergy evident in the pieces contained in this release.

Pill Culture originated with a “hot mic” session, wherein the room mic was run through 3 mixing boards supplying an incredible amount of gain. In line was a guitar delay pedal which allows the hot mic to be pitch shifted and delayed in real time as a response to the sounds generated, a sort of “call and response”, if you will. Then to this hot mic track, synthesizers, drum kit and various percussion instruments were added. These tracks were then interpreted, added to, mixed and edited yielding what is heard in this release
